A Little History of Phoenix; Born from Fire
Jim "Squeak" Saunders and Brad Schneider worked at the original Bunger Surfboard Factory. Charlie Bunger hurt his leg and was forced into retirement in 1985. Jim and Brad ran the factory for several years. In June of 1989, a fire burned down the Bunger Factory. All the tools and templates were destroyed. Crucial templates from the pioneering shapes of the 60's, 70's and 80's were gone in an instant. Jim and Brad rose from the fire to create the Phoenix Surf Factory in 1990 and started rebuilding the template library. Brad moved west to California with Jim taking the Phoenix Surf Factory forward in 1993.
Jim started with his first board in 1963. It was an old Hannon that had massive damage. His Dad had some fiberglass experience from building and maintaining duck boats. He showed his son what he knew about fiberglass and Jim set about fixing the board. A few months later, he started surfing...
John Hannon, who became his mentor, offered Jim a job as the Ding Man at his Rental Shack at Gilgo Beach. Jim moved on to John Hannon's factory where he spent 5 years learning all facets of surfboard creation, from design to manufacture. For the next 20 years, he worked at various surfboard factories including Surf Jet, Union Surfboards, Island Design, Flomaster and Bunger.
Over the last 40 years, Jim has contributed to the evolution to the modern surfboard of today. In the last 20 years in business, Jim has created templates for over 200 top of each era, surfboard shapes. Many of Jim's stock board styles are influenced by what worked for the past masters.
